Free Crochet Mushroom Pattern
In this article, we’ll walk you through the process of crocheting your very own cute woodland mushroom amigurumi. We’ll show you how to crochet the stem and mushroom cap, and then we’ll show you a few ways to customize the look of your mushroom with dots, French knots, and more.
What is amigurumi?
Amigurumi is the Japanese art of crocheting small, cute toys such as animals, characters, and in this case, mushrooms.
If you’re new to amigurumi – or crochet in general – don’t worry. This pattern is beginner-friendly and a great way to get started with the craft.
Materials You’ll Need
Here’s what you’ll need to get started:
- Yarn in mushroom colors. We recommend an off-white or beige color for the stem, and a red, pink, or yellow for the cap.
- Crochet hook in the appropriate size for your chosen yarn. Check the yarn label for a recommended hook size, and then choose one or two sizes smaller than what’s recommended.
- Stitch markers
- Fiberfill for stuffing
- Tapestry needle
- Scissors
Best Yarn for Amiguruimi
You can use any yarn you like for crocheting amigurumi, but you’ll get the best stitch definition with cotton yarn or acrylic yarn. Here are some of our top choices:
- Lily Sugar’n Cream:This is the all-time classic cotton yarn: Lily Sugar n’ Cream. This yarn comes in almost any color imaginable.
- WeCrochet Dishie:This soft cotton yarn has a tighter twist than other cotton yarns, which means it will split less while you crochet.
- WeCrochet Brava:This affordable acrylic yarn comes in a huge rainbow of colors. You can find it in worsted and sport weights.
Crochet Stitches and Techniques
Before we get started with the pattern, let’s go over a few basic stitches and abbreviations. Here are the most commonly used stitches and techniques in amigurumi:
- Magic ring
- Single crochet (sc)
- Sc Increase (inc) – two single crochets in one stitch
- Sc Decrease (dec) – single crochet two stitches together. You can use the traditional sc dec, or the invisible sc dec described below.
- Weaving in the ends

Follow the pattern below to crochet your own cottage-core inspired mushroom.
Difficulty
Advanced Beginner. After you’ve learned basic crochet stitches such as single crochet, increases and decreases, you’re ready to tackle this project.
Finished Measurements
Mushroom measures 5″ wide.
Gauge
16 sc and 18 rows = 4 in
Getting the correct gauge is not crucial to the success of this pattern. That said, it is important to use a crochet hook that’s 1-2 sizes smaller than normal so that you crochet a tight, dense fabric.
Supplies
Hook: G-6 (4.0 mm) These are my favorite ergonomic hooks.
Yarn: Lily Sugar’n Cream weight cotton yarn, about 35g Ercu and 20g Red
Notions
- tapestry needle
- stitch marker, if desired
- ruler or tape measure, if desired
Stitch Abbreviations
- ch = chain
- dec = decrease
- inc = increase
- sc = single crochet
- sc-flo = single crochet through the front loop only
- sc-blo = single crochet through the back loop only
- sl st = slip stitch
- st/sts: stitch/stitches
Special Stitches
When making amigurumi, I prefer to use this invisible crochet decrease instead of the usual sc2tog.
Invisible Single Crochet Decrease
- Insert the hook into the front loop of the first stitch. (You will have 2 loops on the hook.)
- Insert the hook into the front loop of the second stitch. (Three loops on the hook.)
- Yarn over and pull through the first two loops on the hook. (Two loops on the hook)
- Yarn over and pull through both loops on the hook. (One loop on the hook)

- Pattern is worked in spiral (continuous) rounds.

Round 1: With Ecru, make a magic ring. Make 6 SC into the magic ring.
Round 2: Inc in each stitch around (12 sts)
Round 3: (Inc, sc in the next stitch) six times (18 sts)
Round 4: (Inc, sc in the next 2 sts) six times (24 sts)
Round 5: Sc-blo in each st around (24 sts)
Rounds 6-8: Sc in each st around (24 sts)
Round 9: (Inc, sc in the next 5 sts) four times (28 sts)
Round 10-11: Sc in each st around (28 sts)
Round 12: (Dec, sc in the next 5 sts) four times (24 sts)
Round 13-16: Sc in each st around (24 sts)
Round 17: (Dec, sc in the next 4 sts) four times (20 sts)
Round 18: Sc-blo in each stitch around (20 sts)
Round 19-21: Sc in each st around (20 sts)
Round 22: (Dec, sc in the next 3 sts) four times (16 sts)
Round 23: Sc in each st around (16 sts)
Round 24: Working in the front loops only (inc, sc) 8 times (24 sts)

Fasten off, and weave in the ends. Stuff the stem of the mushroom with fiberfill stuffing.

Round 10: Sc in each stitch around (54 sts). Do not fasten off.
Attach the Stem to the Cap
Align the stem piece inside the cap piece. The pieces may be slightly different diameters, but each piece should have the same number of stitches (54 sts).
Working into both loops of the cap AND the front loop of the stem, sc in each stitch around.
Just before finishing the round, you can add poly toy stuffing to the cap if desired.
Fasten off, and weave in the ends.
Cap Shape Variations
- For a poofier cap, add 1 or more rounds of plain sc after Round 10.
- For a larger cap, add 1 or more rounds of plain sc after joining the stem to the cap.
- For a pointer cap, add a round of plain sc in between Rounds 2, 3, 4, and 5.
Finishing Touches
Now that the crocheting is complete, you can add some finishing touches to bring your mushroom to life. Use the following instructions to add some details to the mushroom, like dots, French Knots, or a ring around the stem.
Ring
Use the following instructions to add a ruffled ring around the stem of the mushroom.
With Ecru yarn:
- Into the front loops of round 18, crochet(sc, 2sc into next st) 10 times (30 sts)
- Join with slip stitch, fasten off, and weave in ends.
Dots
Use the following instructions to add large cartoon-like polka dots to the top of the mushroom cap.
- With Ecru yarn, make a magic ring. Make 6 SC into the magic ring.
- Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch of the round.
- Use the yarn ends to attach the dots to the mushroom cap.
- Repeat to make as many dots as desired.
French Knots
If you prefer smaller dots, you can add French Knots to the top of the mushroom cap instead.
- Thread a tapestry needle with Ecru yarn.
- Insert the needle from the underside of the cap.
- Wrap the yarn around the needle three times. Keep the wraps tight with your other hand.
- Insert the needle back down through the mushroom cap, just beside the spot where you came up. Pull through.
- Repeat to make as many dots as desired. Fasten off, and weave in the ends.
