25+ Textured Crochet Stitches Explained (with videos) (2024)

Check out the most amazing textured crochet stitches on the web – many of these you’ve probably never seen before!

One of the things that I absolutely love about crochet is that you never really get to the point where you’ve learned everything there is to learn. That’s because this beautiful yarn craft of ours is constantly growing! And also because the art of crochet is seriously old. So between all the designers that came before us, and all the new designers out there right now – there’s always new crochet techniques, fresh crochet patterns, and pretty crochet stitches you’ve never even heard of. How exciting!

I am constantly in search of new crochet stitches to use for my crochet projects – especially textured crochet stitches! Textured crochet stitches really make my projects pop. They are fun to crochet, they are fun to look at, and they are of course fun to feel too! You’re probably familiar with the common textured crochet stitches out there like popcorn stitches and bobble stitches. But there’s so much more textured crochet stitches out there!

Techniques for Working Textured Crochet Stitches

There are several different techniques that will result in crochet texture and we will look at several of those here. Any of these easy crochet stitches would be perfect for a scarf or baby blanket!

1. Texture can be achieved by using post double or treble crochet stitches, which raises the post of the stitch. This is often used to mimic knitted ribbing, create basketweave patterns, and work crochet cables.

2. There are special stitches you can work that raise off the surface of the fabric due to their grouped nature, such as the bobble stitch, puff stitch, popcorn stitch and bean stitch.

3. You can also create texture by working several stitches into the same space. The difference between this and the stitches mentioned in tip #2 are that those stitches are grouped together (like the popcorn stitch is several dc sts, but they are finished off by pulling them together at the end). The stitches I’m talking about here are ones like shells (multiple dc in one st that fan out), ripple stitch or chevron stitch, which are unique crochet stitches that add texture.

4. Working across other crochet stitches, such as post double or treble stitches that cross over other stitches, such as the diamond stitch and crochet cables.

5. Inserting the hook into different parts of the stitch. We’ve already seen you can do that with post double crochet, but there are also stitches like the waistcoat stitch where you insert your hook into a different part of the stitch.

6. Working special techniques, such as c2c crochet (corner to corner crochet), where you work the stitches at different angles to each other.

I’ve scoured the corners of the internet for textured crochet stitches new and old. Some of these decorative crochet stitches are brand new to me – and I’ve been crocheting for years! If you know more than a couple textured crochet stitches on this list, then I am seriously impressed. Some of these stitch tutorials are super easy and only use basic stitches like single crochet, the half double crochet stitch, and double crochet stitch.

Some of these stitch tutorials are more challenging. Y’all know that I always like to include a mix of skill levels in my free crochet pattern round ups! So get to scrolling and see all these amazing textured crochet stitches for yourself.
